Women’s Tennis Drops BIG EAST Opener to DePaul, 6-1

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to DePaul in the Bluejays BIG EAST opener inside the Hanscom Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Bluejays fell to 6-3 on the year and 0-1 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul improved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in league action.
Junior Annika Elvestrom and freshman Olivia Minikle gave Creighton an early advantage in doubles, picking up a 6-1 win on the No. 2 doubles court. DePaul, however, responded with win a pair of 6-2 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles play, the Blue Demons claimed straight set victories on the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles court to clinch the overall dual. Sesha Stula won 6-2, 6-1 on court No. 2 and Isabella Gibson secured a 6-1, 6-1 victory on the No. 5 singles court, before Eva Goncharov clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court No. 4.
Junior Ana Paula Martinez claimed the Bluejays lone point of the match, capturing a 6-2, 6-4 triumph on the No. 3 singles court.
DePaul closed out the match picking up a 7-5, 7-5 win on the top single court by Hannah Smith, followed by a 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 11-9 three-set victory on No. 6 singles court by Roberta Sechi.
The Bluejays will need to reset quickly as they head to battle crosstown rival Omaha at the Miracle Hills Tennis Center on Sunday at 4 p.m.
