OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team fell to crosstown rival Omaha, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Miracle Hills Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb.
The Bluejays fell to 6-4 on the year with the loss, while the Mavericks improved to 4-6, picked up their first win over the Bluejays in 20 all-time meetings.
"Jean and I could see this one coming a mile away," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Omaha has a good team and competed well. We played like we had the weight of the world on our shoulders and were very tight at too many spots this afternoon. Every year this match has been a very close one and we have come out on top, and the weight kept getting heavier. I hope we learn from this one and continue to get better. Great work by Omaha today. They deserved this one."
A battle for the doubles point saw the Mavericks take an early advantage, securing a 6-1 victory on the No. 3 doubles court. Junior Annika Elvestrom and freshman Olivia Minikel answered with a quick 6-2 win of their own at the No. 2 doubles position, forcing a winner-take-all match at the top doubles spot.
Seniors Bianca Rademacher and Valerie Negin held a 5-4 lead late in the set, before Omaha's Zoe Adkins and Paula Arcarons won the final three games to clinching the first point of the match with a 7-5 victory at the top doubles position.
Trailing 1-0, Minikel leveled the match at 1-1, claiming a 6-1, 6-1 straight sets victory at the No. 6 singles spot.
Omaha, however, responded with straight set victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles slots to clinch the overall dual. Katelynn Kock started with a 6-1, 6-2 win on the No. 5 court, followed by a 6-2, 6-0 win on the No. 3 court by Khayli Buckels. Arcarons then clinched the dual with an identical 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 singles position.
The Bluejays would answer with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 straight sets victory on the No. 4 court by freshman Philippa Roy, before Adkins claimed a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win at the top singles spot to close out the victory for the Mavericks.
Creighton returns to the court on Saturday, March 1 when they host Connecticut at 4 p.m. inside the Hanscom Tennis Center.
