Daijima’s Three-Set Thriller Lifts Men’s Tennis Past Georgetown, 4-3

CHICAGO, Ill. – Knotted at 3-3 with only one singles match remaining, junior Yuma Daijima battled to a three-set victory on the No. 2 singles court to help the Creighton men's tennis team clinch a 4-3 victory over Georgetown on Saturday afternoon in Chicago, Ill.
The win propels the Bluejays to 10-5 on the year and 3-1 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown fell to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in league action.
With the match leveled at 3-3 and the overall dual on the line, Daijima locked in and delivered a 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 win on the No. 3 singles court to secure the Bluejays third consecutive BIG EAST victory.
The Bluejays got going early, clinching the doubles point for the 13th time this season with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Senior Alejandro Gandini and Daijima teamed up for a 6-2 victory on the No. 2 doubles court, before juniors Kirtan Patel and Zachary Kuo clinched the first point of the match with a 6-4 triumph at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Freshman Rocky McKenzie rolled to a quick 6-0, 6-2 win on the No. 5 singles court, before Georgetown battled back to level the contest with straight victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles slot.
Creighton would regain a 3-2 lead with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 straight sets win at the top singles spot from Gandini, before a three-set Georgetown win on the No. 2 singles court leveled the contest and set up the dramatic finish.
The Bluejays return home and begins a four-game home streak against former Missouri Valley Conference foe Illinois State on March 22 at 2 p.m. from the Westside High School Tennis Courts.
