Men’s Tennis Takes Down Illinois State, 4-3, For Third Straight Victory

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team picked up their third straight victory with a 4-3 win over Illinois State on Saturday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 11-5 on the year, while the Redbirds fell to 4-13 overall with the loss.
Creighton continued its winning ways early on, claiming the doubles point for the 14th time this season. Senior Alejando Gandini and junior Yuma Daijima, the reigning BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week, opened play with a dominant 6-1 win on the No. 3 doubles court, before juniors Zachary Kuo and Kirtan Patel captured a 6-2 victory on the No. 2 doubles court to clinch the first point of the match.
Leading 1-0, the Bluejays quickly extended their lead as freshman Rocky McKenzie posted a 6-3, 6-4 straight sets win on the No. 4 singles court to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.
Illinois State would answer with a win on the No. 1 singles court from Tomas Valencia (7-5, 6-2) and a straight sets win on the No. 5 singles court from Jett Leong (7-5, 6-3) to level the contest at 2-2.
Creighton's Max Stollecker countered with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 three-set win over Caden Scarlett on the No. 6 singles court to regain a 3-2 lead for the Bluejays. Daijima then clinched the match with a 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3) come-from-behind three-set victory over Tin Ostro at the No. 3 singles spot to secure the victory.
Illinois State, however, would close the match with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win on the No. 2 singles court to close the match.
The Bluejays will continue its homestand on Friday, March 28 when they host BIG EAST rival Marquette at 4 p.m. at the Westside High School Tennis Courts.
