TULSA, Okla. -- Freshman Rocky McKenzie battled out a three-set victory on the No. 5 singles court to help the Creighton men's tennis team outlast Oral Roberts, 4-3, on Saturday night at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
The Bluejays improved to13-8 on year with the win, while Oral Roberts fell to 5-16 with the loss.
"We continue to work toward great consistency," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "By all means, it was a respectable team effort tonight."
Creighton got going early, clinching the doubles point for the 17th time this season with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Oral Roberts' Ricardo Filho and Parv Nage captured a 6-3 win on the No. 1 doubles court, before senior Alejandro Gandini and junior Yuma Daijima picked up a 7-5 win at the No. 2 doubles position. Junior's Zachary Kuo and Kirtan Patel would then pull out a 7-6 (7-4) on the No. 3 doubles court to clinch the first point of the match.
The Bluejays quickly built a 3-0 lead in singles play as Patel rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 3 singles spot and Kuo posted a 6-1, 6-4 win on the No. 4 singles court.
Oral Roberts, however, clawed back into the match with straight set victories on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles courts to level the contest at 3-3.
Knotted at 3-3 and the overall dual on the line, McKenzie locked in and delivered a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 triumph on the No. 5 singles court to clinch the Bluejays 13th win of the season.
Creighton will wrap up the weekend with a road contest at Tulsa on Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
