Booth and Wait honored
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton Volleyball program brought home two trophies at the 7th Omaha Sports Commission Awards Show (OSCAS) on Thursday night at The Relevant Center.
Kendra Wait was recognized as Female Athlete of the Year Presented by Renaissance Financial, while Kirsten Bernthal Booth was named Female Coach of the Year.
Wait repeated as BIG EAST Player of the Year and BIG EAST Setter of the Year in 2024 as the Gardner, Kan., product led the BIG EAST in assists per set (10.97) for the fourth straight season, good for 12th nationally. The four-time All-BIG EAST honoree's setting helped Creighton establish a program record for hitting percentage (.324), the second-best mark in the country. Wait made history last fall when she became the first student-athlete in Creighton history to be named a First Team Academic All-American the same year as being named a First Team All-American as a player. Wait now plays professionally for the Omaha Supernovas.
Booth led Creighton to a 32-3 record in the fall of 2024 as the program reached its first Elite Eight since 2016. She coached the Bluejays to unprecedented heights in 22 seasons on the Creighton sideline, including 502 wins, 14 NCAA Tournament trips, 12 regular-season conference titles and 11 conference tournament championships. Her teams earned 17 AVCA Team Academic Awards and featured nine women who combined for 12 College Sports Communicators Academic All-America accolades. She stepped down as head coach in April to accept a position with League One Volleyball (LOVB).
Other Creighton-related nominees included Ryan Kalkbrenner (Male Athlete of the Year), Lauren Jensen (Female Athlete of the Year Presented by Renaissance Financial), Volleyball (Team of the Year) and John Bishop (Steve Pivovar Sports Media Person of the Year Presented by OWH).
