KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A penalty kick goal in the 90th minute from graduate student Ariana Mondiri lifted the Creighton Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 win over Kansas City on Sunday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 1-1-0 on the year, while the Roos fell to 0-2-0 overall.
A scoreless battle through the first 45 minutes, saw neither team find much offense as both squads enter the break with one shot apiece.
The Bluejays quickly turned the momentum in their favor, taking a 1-0 lead in the 69th minutes on a strike from the top of the box from senior transfer Brynn Gardner. A through ball from junior captain Savanna Solomon placed Garnder on the left side of the box, before a quick moved to the inside allowed Garnder to place a perfectly placed shot in the top left corner for her first goal as a Bluejay.
Creighton held its advantage until the 85th minute, when Kansas City's Olivia Platt drew a foul in the box and squeaked a shot just inside the left post and past the diving Alyssa Zalac to level the score at 1-1 with five minutes to play.
CU frantically picked up the pressure and had looked to have delivered the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute, but after review a foul in the box overturned the Bluejays goal and kept the score knotted at 1-1.
With less than a minute remaining, Creighton ignited one final push as Mondiri earned a penalty kick of her own after being tripped up receiving a pass over the top from Mallory Connealy. Mondiri calmly stepped to the dot and buried her first goal of the season into the left corner of the goal to secure the 2-1 win for the Bluejays.
The Bluejays closed the contest with an 8-4 edge in shots, while the Roos created a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. A physical contest, Creighton was whistled for 26 fouls in the match, its most in a match since being called for 27 fouls against Iowa State last fall.
Creighton returns home to host Iowa State in the second edition of the "Tea Cup" battle on Thursday, Aug. 21 inside Morrison Stadium. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Cyclones is scheduled for 6 p.m.
