Bluejays Defeat Marquette 1-0
Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Men's Soccer opens BIG EAST play with a dramatic 1-0 victory against undefeated Marquette on Friday, September 19th. The Bluejays win streak stretched to four after Friday night's contest, moving Creighton to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action. Marquette, meanwhile, fell to 3-1-2 on the season and 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play.
The match turned in the 81st minute as a foul called just outside the box provided a opportunity to seize the advantage. Junior Miguel Arilla blasted a shot over the Golden Eagle wall and the fingertips of Marquette goalkeeper Cameron Simpson towards the right post. Simpson got just enough to push the shot flush into the post, the carom found the foot of Bluejay defender Brian Edelman for his second goal of the season with 80:48 showing on the clock.Â
Continuing the physical battle the two sides waged against one another throughout the match, Creighton held Marquette at bay to post its fourth clean sheet in the past five contests.
Marquette had a crucial opportunity to score in the 77th minute, but Creighton goalkeeper Matthew Hudson made a diving save off Bryce Richards shot to keep the shutout streak going.
Creighton finished the match leading in shots 14-10 against the Golden Eagles. The Bluejays also held the edge in corners created 6-5. The physical battle saw a combined 38 fouls (20 for Creighton) and seven cards (four issued to the Bluejays).
The Bluejays continued BIG EAST play, heading out on the road on the 27th of September against the DePaul Blue Demons.
