OMAHA, Neb. – An equalizing penalty kick goal in the 34th minute from graduate Ariana Mondiri earned the Creighton Women's Soccer team a 1-1 draw with Marquette on Saturday afternoon inside Morrison Stadium.
The draw moves the Bluejays to 4-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles moved to 4-3-3 on the year and 0-0-2 in league action.
A back-and-forth battle in the opening frame saw the visiting Golden Eagles take a 1-1 lead in the 23rd minute (22:52) when Meg Decker threaded a through ball to Jocelyn Leigh on the left side of the 18-yard box. Leigh gathered the pass and eluded a Bluejay defender to the left before lasering a shot into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
The Bluejays responded quickly, delivering the equalizer at the 33:31 mark after a handball in the box led to a penalty kick opportunity. Mondiri stepped to the dot and buried her third penalty kick to the right side of the goal to level the match at 1-1 just before the break.
Creighton came out of the locker room with a little more urgency on the offensive end of the pitch, creating multiple goal scoring opportunities down the stretch.
Sophomore Anna Bragg had a breakaway shot denied with a diving save by Marquette's Hailey Wade in the 71st minute, while junior Savanna Solomon missed high on a shot from just outside the box in the 88th minute as Creighton settled for the draw.
The Bluejays finished the contest with a 15-9 lead in shots, while Marquette owned a 6-5 edge in corner kicks created.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 1 when they host Xavier at 7 p.m.
