About Villanova
Scouting Villanova (20-5, 13-3 BIG EAST)
Villanova remains undefeated over a five-game stretch ahead of its contest with the Bluejays at D.J. Sokol Arena. Each of the Wildcats' last five wins was delivered by a 10-plus point margin.Â
Most recently, the Wildcats dominated on the road, defeating Xavier for a 78-38 final score.
Away from the comforts of home, Villanova was unfazed, taking a 34-14 lead at halftime and doubling it with a monster third quarter. The Wildcats shot 68.18% from the field (15-of-22) and 63.64% from three (7-of-11) for a combined 37-15 score in the third quarter alone.
Three Wildcats scored 10-plus points, spearheaded by Jasmine Bascoe, who racked up 18. Brynn McCurry (15 points) and Ryanna Allen off the bench (11 points) rounded out the triad of double-figure scorers.
Bascoe leads the team in offense output, averaging 18 points per game this season. McCurry trails just behind with 11.5 points per game, leading the team with 5.4 rebounds per game.
Scouting Creighton (12-13; 8-8 BIG EAST)
The Bluejays look to reignite the momentum of a four-game win streak after it was snuffed out by No. 1 UConn.
On the road facing the only undefeated team in the country, Creighton held its own in the opening quarter, but ultimately folded under the Huskies' intense pressure, falling 94-44.
The first quarter saw the score the closest it would be all game, as 44.4% shooting from beyond the arc for the Bluejays allowed the score to be knotted at 14 apiece with a minute remaining in the quarter. Even as a 5-0 Huskies run defined the final minute, a 19-14 UConn lead at half was a surmountable deficit.Â
However, the Huskies dominated the next three quarters, outscoring Creighton a combined 65-30. By the end of the game, Creighton won the offensive rebounding battle 11-1, but couldn't defeat the nation's best.Â
Kennedy Townsend finished the game with 10 points, while Elizabeth Gentry collected her seventh double-digit performance of the season with 12 points. Creighton shot a collective 26% from three and 22.58% from the field.Â
Keys to the Game:
Recap of First Meeting: 1-1-26
Villanova 74, Creighton 64
Despite a dynamic performance from freshmen Neleigh Gessert and Kendall McGee, Creighton Women's Basketball fell 74-64 at Villanova on Thursday, January 1.Â
The Bluejays got off to a fast start, hitting five of their first seven shots to race out to a 13-5 edge with 4:04 remaining in the first quarter. Kennedy Townsend delivered seven early points on a pair of driving layups, while Neleigh Gessert connected on a pair of trifectas.Â
Villanova responded with a 20-3 surge over the next nine minutes to run out to a 25-16 advantage, drawing a timeout from head coach Jim Flanery with 5:22 left in the half. Out of the timeout the Bluejays settled back in as Kendall McGee scored five straight Creighton points. The Wildcats, however, extended their lead to 36-23 at the half.
Coming back to the court after the half, McGee and Neleigh Gessert each found their range with 18 combined points in the quarter. McGee delivered nine in the frame helping the Bluejays draw as close as eight at 52-44 with 1:08 left.
Villanova answered with 10 of the next 11 to extend its advantage to 62-45 (7:30). Down the stretch Townsend scored eight more and Neleigh Gessert contributed seven, but the Bluejays drew no closer than nine (71-62) in the closing moments.
Neleigh Gessert led all scorers with 25 points, equaling her career-high. Her seven made three-pointers moved Neleigh Gessert into a 13-way tie for seventh in single game history. Townsend delivered 19 points, while McGee set a career mark with 14 points. Villanova got a team-high 19 points from Kennedy Henry.

Creighton was 4-for-24 (16.7%) from inside the arc and 10-for-38 (26.3%) from long range. Keys to the Game:
- Limit the runs: In the two teams' first meeting, two critical runs gave Villanova the advantage at the end of the game. First, a 20–3 surge began late in the first quarter and carried into the second, before 10 made shots out of 11 in the fourth quarter helped Villanova take the win in the first matchup. To even the score at this time, the Bluejays must prevent the Wildcats from stringing together extended runs.Â
- Take care of the ball: Last game, 14 Creighton turnovers resulted in 13 points for Villanova. In a 10-point loss, those extra possessions proved costly. Against a Wildcat team that averages 9.7 steals per game and forces 17.6 turnovers per game this season, the Bluejays must prioritize taking care of the ball every possession.
- Limit Jasmine Bacoe's efficiency: The first time these teams met this season, Creighton held Villanova's leading scorer to 15 points on just 7-of-19 shooting, forcing her into an inefficient night. Bascoe averages 18 points per game, so if the Bluejays can again disrupt Bascoe's rhythm and make every look difficult, the result could be a victory in this second meeting.
