
Men’s Tennis Soars Past Villanova with 7-0 Sweep

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Creighton men's tennis team picked up its second BIG EAST sweep in program history, cruising to a 7-0 sweep of Villanova on Thursday afternoon in Queens, N.Y.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 10-6 on the year and 2-0 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova fell to 4-8 overall and 0-1 in league action.
Creighton got off to a fast start, claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Seniors Kirtan Patel and Yuma Daijima picked up their ninth doubles win of the season, thumping Villanova's Kush Anand and Thomas Wakefield, 6-1, on the No. 2 doubles court. The Wildcats answered with a 6-4 win at the top doubles spot, before Zachary Kuo and Mathis Dahler picked up a 7-5 victory on the No. 3 doubles court to clinch the first point of the match.
Leading 1-0, Creighton quickly secured the match, posting straight set victories on the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles courts.
Daijima rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win at the top single spot, before Dahler captured a 6-3, 6-1 victory on the No. 4 singles court to give the Jays a 3-0 lead. Patel then clinched the overall dual with a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets triumph on the No. 2 singles court to secure the Bluejays sixth consecutive regular season BIG EAST win dating back to last season.
Sophomore Rocky McKenzie followed suit with a 6-4, 6-2 win on the No. 5 singles court, while Kuo collected a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 three set victory at the No. 3 singles spot for the Jays. Jack McMahon would close out the match with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-6 three-set win of his own on the No. 6 singles court to secure the perfect 7-0 sweep.
Creighton will wrap up its spring break trip to the east coast on Friday with a 12:00 p.m. match against the defending BIG EAST champs St. John's in Queens.
