CHICAGO, Ill. – The Creighton men's tennis team ended its regular season with a 7-0 setback at DePaul on Sunday afternoon at the XS Tennis Village in Chicago, Ill.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 12-13 on the year and 3-4 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons improved to 9-12 overall and 6-0 in league action.
DePaul claimed the first point of the match after edging out the Bluejays with tight doubles victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. DePaul's Thomas Giles and Sven Moser picked up a 6-3 win on the No. 3 doubles court to grab an early advantage.
Senior Yuma Daijima and sophomore Rocky McKenzie would then battle back to earn a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4) tie-breaking win at the top doubles spot over former Bluejay Alejandro Gandini and Pablo Torres Almeida to level the contest at one-match apiece. DePaul, however, answered with a 7-6 (7-4) tie-breaking win of their own at the No. 2 doubles spot to clinch the doubles point and give the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead.
DePaul quickly pushed it advantage to 2-0 as Gandini earned the win at the top spot as Daijime was forced to retire due to an injury.
The Blue Demons continued their winning ways, clinching the match with straight set wins on the No. 3 and No. 5 singles court. Andy Hadziabdic picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 singles spot, before Almeida clinched the overall dual with a 6-3, 6-3 win on the No. 3 singles court.
DePaul would add to its lead moments later with a 6-2, 7-5 straight sets win at the No. 6 singles position from Sven Moser before closing out the victory with straight sets win from Sebastian Medica and Tobias Leitner at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions.
The Bluejays return to the courts on Friday, April 17 at 9 a.m. for the start of the BIG EAST Championships presented by JEEP in Cayce, S.C.
