Tax Information for Men's Basketball Jaybacker contributions due to The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, effective December 31, 2017, repealed the deduction for amounts paid in exchange for college athletic event seating rights. Due to this Act, currently contributions made to Men's Basketball Jaybacker allocations (General Fund, Men's Basketball, Coaching Excellence, Leadership, Scholarships) tied to season tickets are not tax-deductible.
In order to deduct 100 percent of a Jaybacker contribution, the donor must submit in writing - via a letter or an e-mail - a waiver of benefits at the time of making a pledge and/or contribution. A waiver of benefits communication from the donor precludes the donor from receiving rights to any goods or services as a "quid pro quo," anything in exchange for a contribution.
By submitting a waiver of benefits communication, the donor further understands that he or she is ineligible to purchase or renew men's basketball season tickets in donation-required sections of the arena and that he or she will not receive parking passes, gifts, apparel items or any other tangible benefit.
Creighton supporters are encouraged to consult with a legal or financial advisor on the deductibility of Men's Basketball specific Jaybacker contributions. Please contact the Athletic Development Office with questions or for updates related to the legislation's impact on contributions supporting Creighton Athletics.
Tax Information for all non-men's basketball Jaybacker contributions
Currently, contributions made to all non-men's basketball Jaybacker programs will be receipted as deductible less less the value of other tangible benefits received (parking passes, gifts, apparel, etc.)
In order to deduct 100 percent of a Jaybacker contribution, the donor submit a waiver of benefits at the time of making a pledge and/or contribution.
