Chevelle Saunsoci
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Saunsoci stepped away from the Creighton bench after the 2019-20 season to pursue a dream to connect underprivileged youths with basketball and college opportunities. During her two seasons away Saunsoci laid the groundwork for her dream, the DVLP program. Designed to help children from third grade and up to connect with college and professional athletes in the hope to aide the pursuit of college and athletic development.
While DVLP continued to grow, the pull to return to Creighton was too great when an opening came during the summer of 2022. Saunsoci played an integral role in recruiting many of the players on the Creighton team and coach Flanery was happy to bring her back into the fold.
“Chevy does such a great job of helping young women grow, both on and off the court,” said Flanery. “Chevy understands how we have success at Creighton. She brings an enthusiasm for the every day that will push our players and staff to be at our best.”
During Saunsoci’s time on the bench, the Bluejays made three trips to the NCAA Tournament (2013, 2017 and 2018), advancing to the Second Round each time. Saunsoci specifically worked with new staff member Jaylyn Agnew, helping the Kansas native earn the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honor in 2017, an All-BIG EAST Tournament Team selection in 2019, the BIG EAST Player of the Year in 2020 and become the Bluejays’ first player drafted as well as play in the WNBA.
Before returning to Creighton, Saunsoci served as an assistant coach at Midland University in 2012-13. Despite being with the Warriors for just one season, Saunsoci helped Midland improve its record by 33 percent, moving from nine to 12 victories.
Prior to Midland, Saunsoci coached at Benson High School (2010-11) and with the Omaha Crusaders AAU team (2011). In addition, Saunsoci led the South Dakota Attack, an Elite AAU team, during the summer of 2013.
A three-year starter for Creighton, Saunsoci played her entire tenure under Flanery’s direction. She closed her career with 1,098 points, 254 assists and 119 steals. Following her junior season, Saunsoci was an All-MVC Second Team selection as she led Creighton with 441 points. She also earned a spot on the 2010 MVC All-Tournament Team, helping the Bluejays advance to the championship game.
Saunsoci graduated from Creighton with a bachelor’s degree in public relations in 2010. During the summer of 2017, Chevelle married Eddie Saunsoci. The couple have two daughters, K’Ali and Kobey.
