Mike Jones is in his first season as a graduate manager with the Creighton men’s basketball program.
He joins the coaching ranks after an illustrious playing career that saw him twice earn all-Western Athletic Conference honors at TCU before an 11-year professional career in Europe.
Jones began his pro career in Poland, and also played in France, Turkey and Iran before returning to the United States to begin his life in coaching.
Despite playing only two seasons with the Horned Frogs, Jones remains the school’s all-time leader with 163 career steals. He is also tied for seventh with 339 career assists and 10th in school history with 1,323 career points. His per-game averages of 19.5 points, 2.4 steals and 5.0 assists per game all rank in the top-10 of the TCU record book.
Jones became the first player in TCU history to score 40 or more points in consecutive games and he had three games of 44+ points in his career. He set a school record with 51 points in a game on Dec. 3, 1997 against Delaware State, only to see teammate Lee Nailon eclipse that mark with 53 points nine days later.
He was named WAC Defensive Player of the Year following his senior season, which also saw him pick up honorable-mention All-America accolades.
Jones’ head coach at TCU was the famed Billy Tubbs, while current Bluejay assistant coach Brian Fish was also an assistant for those teams.
Jones arrived at TCU after two years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, where he scored 1,014 points and snared 408 rebounds in 61 games with the Golden Norse.
Jones is a native of Oklahoma City, Okla., where he was named the 1994 Oklahoma High School Player of the Year after averaging 30.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game at Casady Prep School.
He is currently seeking a master’s degree in counseling at Creighton.
Jones and his wife, Marcia, have a son, Major Princeton Jones, born in July.
