Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame

Randy Eccker
- Induction:
- 1999
- Class:
- 1978
A member of the Creighton men's basketball team from 1974 to 1978, Eccker started at point guard his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons for the Bluejays and still ranks second in school history with 418 career assists. A former Academic All-American, Eccker was the team captain his senior season and led the Bluejays to the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and postseason tournament championships in Creighton's first year back in the league. The 1977-78 Bluejays, with three victories against Larry Bird's Indiana State Sycamores, finished with a 19-9 record, losing to DePaul in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
During Eccker's four years as a player, the Bluejays compiled a 79-30 (.725) record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1975 and 1978, as well as the National Invitational Tournament in 1977. In a poll of fans in the early 1980s, Eccker was selected to Creighton's 1970s All-Decade Team.
"Randy's playing career at Creighton preceded my time here, but from everything I have heard, he was a tremendous leader on the floor," said Creighton Director of Athletics Bruce Rasmussen. "He was a tremendous player both offensively and defensively. Although he did not score a lot of points, he quarterbacked the team and made the plays necessary for the offense to run properly.
"What I do know about Randy," added Rasmussen, "is that since his playing career ended, he has been a great ambassador for Creighton University. He was a part-time assistant coach at Creighton (1978-80), and he has volunteered his time and resources for several activities to benefit Creighton Athletics.
