The game: Creighton vs. Indiana State (and Larry Bird), March 4, 1978, for the Missouri Valley Championship.
The score was tied, 52-52, with 23 seconds left, when guard Randy Eccker passed the ball to the open man, Rick Apke, who made the shot from 21 feet.
"I knew I had to do something with
it," said Apke, "so I figured, what the
heck, I might as well shoot."
Final Score: Creighton 54, Indiana State 52.
That shot was probably one of the most memorable in the history of
Creighton Basketball, made by someone who epitomized the ideal student-athlete every time he walked on the court or into the classroom, Rick Apke.
An honorable mention All-American his senior year and the Most Valuable Player for the Bluejays his last three seasons, Apke averaged 15.4 points and 6.5 rebounds during his career. As a senior, he was first team All-Missouri Valley Conference, first team All-District Five, and first team Academic All-American. Apke is second on Creighton's all-time scoring list with 1682 total points, and during his four-year career, he led the Jays to the NCAA tournament twice, the NIT once, and the Valley championship in 1978.
Just as importantly, Rick Apke excelled in the classroom. He received his undergraduate degree in 1978 and was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. He earned his M.D. from Creighton's School of Medicine in 1982 and is now a practicing physician in the Denver, Colorado area.
