SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? Damien Westfield's first half goal proved to be the difference in a great defensive effort by the Creighton men's soccer team Friday night at the Cooper Sports Complex as the Jays defeated Southwest Missouri State, 1-0. The 21st-ranked Jays improve to 8-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play with the victory.
Westfield jumped above the SMS (3-10-0, 1-3-0 MVC) defender and headed in his fourth goal of the season over the outstretched arms of the goalkeepr at 14:07. He received a long crossing pass from senior Luiz Del Monte. The goal held up for CU, as the Jays went on to blank their second consecutive Valley opponent.
“We got an early goal like we have been doing so often this year,” said Head Coach Bob Warming after the game. “In the second half our defense really clamped down. SMS was able to take some shots from the outside, but we held off any serious threats. I can't say enough about the efforts of Mike Gabb in goal and Shane Havens and Matt Wieland in the middle of our defense.”
Senior Mike Gabb (Omaha / Burke) stopped three shots in net for the Jays as he continues his stellar play after taking a medical redshirt last season.
The nationally ranked Jays return to action Sunday when they head to Evansville to take on the Purple Aces at 2 p.m. Evansville will enter the match with a 6-6-2 mark, 1-3-0 in the MVC after a 1-0 Friday night loss to Drake.
