OMAHA, Neb. - David Wagenfuhr's goal in the 70th minute of Saturday night's home opener against Oakland in the 2002 Diadora Challenge provided all the offense the Creighton men's soccer team needed in 1-0 shutout of the Golden Grizzlies.
Mike Gabb made a triumphant return in goal for the 19th-ranked Bluejays, after receiving a medical redshirt last year due to a leg injury. The fifth-year senior stopped four OU shots for his ninth career shutout.
Wagenfuhr, playing from the back Saturday night, drilled home the first CU score of the season at 69:12. His shot found the back of the net after it deflected off the OU keeper, Omaha native, Jeff Weise. Sophomore Julian Nash, making his first career start, was awarded an assist on the play.
The Bluejays maintained control throughout the match, remaining on the attack for most of the first half. CU out-shot OU, 6-5 in the first 45 minutes. The Golden Grizzlies fired back in the second frame to total 11 shots to CU's nine for the match. OU's Anders Vollen had a match-high four shots on the night.
With the win, CU remains undefeated in the annual tournament. The Jays improved their mark at the Diadora Challenge to 9-0-1 in the sixth year of the event. Creighton also stayed undefeated in season openers under head coach Bob Warming, now 6-0-1 in Warming's seven season debuts.
Earlier in the day, Notre Dame defeated Southwest Missouri State, 3-2. The Fighting Irish received two goals from senior standout Erich Braun, while SMS also had a multiple goal-scorer in freshman Kai Harris. ND scored 17 seconds into the match and then broke a 2-2 tie on a penalty kick in the 69th minute to win their season opener.
