
Huge Crowd Watches Eighth-Ranked Men's Soccer Tie Home Opener

OMAHA, Neb. - A new era of Creighton soccer was welcomed in with the fourth-largest crowd in Bluejay home history witnessing the eighth-ranked men's soccer team playing to a 0-0 tie with Butler. An electric crowd of 3,483 was on hand for the first ever regular-season match at the new on-campus Creighton Soccer Complex as part of the seventh annual Diadora Challenge tournament.
The Bluejays out-shot the Bulldogs 26-10 but were unable to capitalize on any opportunity. CU goalkeeper Guido Leon made two saves on the night, while BU keeper Evan Reinhardt stopped seven shots on goal and the Bulldog defense chipped in with two team saves.
David Wagenfuhr unloaded a rocket shot as regulation neared an end and Matt Jewett had two shots on goal in the second overtime period, but all shots on the evening were turned away.
The Jays did have a shot find the back of the net in the first half. Zach Kinney knocked a goal in, but it was disallowed as a foul was called on the Bluejays on the play.
CU also topped the Bulldogs on corner kicks, 11-7, while attacking for a majority of play. Jewett led the way with seven shots, four making their way on goal. Wagenfuhr attempted five shots on the evening, while freshman Jarod Tarver notched four shots in the match.
For purposes of the Diadora Challenge, the game went to penalty kicks to determine the match ups on Sunday. No stats were counted after the end of the overtime sessions. The Bulldogs advanced as the winners, 7-6.
Butler will face second-ranked Maryland on Sunday at 11:30 a.m., in the championship match. The Terrapins defeated No. 15 Furman, 1-0, in the tournament's first match. Abe Thompson scored the only goal of the day in the 58th minute. He was assisted by A.J. Herrera and goalkeeper Noah Palmer on the tally at 57:41.
The Bluejays will look to tally their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon when they take on Furman at 2 p.m.
NOTES: Creighton President Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., performed a special blessing at the new Creighton Soccer Complex prior to Friday night's match ... The Jays remain undefeated in season openers under Head Coach Bob Warming, now 6-0-2 ... The Jays are now 0-0-3 in the season's first match, the year following a College Cup appearance.
