OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton men's soccer team was shutout for the third time in five matches this year, falling to UNLV, 2-0, on Friday night in the Ameritas Classic at the Creighton Soccer Field. The Jays out-shot the Rebels 22-12 but were unable to tally a goal in the loss.
The Rebels (1-4-0) wasted no time in jumping on the Bluejays (1-2-2), scoring just 41 seconds into the match. Mark Stock gathered a rebound off a Rebel shot which hit the cross bar, and he banged it in the net for his first goal of the season.
UNLV continued its scoring in the 18th minute, when Alex Hernandez nailed a shot into the upper left corner of the net from nearly 25 yards out. Victor Arbelaez was credited with an assist.
The Jays went to their bench early and often in the defeat, using 12 players off the bench, including goalkeeper Andrew Brown. Brown entered the match to begin the second half and made two saves in his 45 minutes of play after Guido Leon made two saves and allowed the two UNLV goals in the first half.
Of CU's 22 shots, just seven went on goal as UNLV keeper Matt Johnson made several spawling saves to maintain his shutout. Johnson even stopped a Damien Westfield penalty kick in the 88th minute.
UNLV was more efficient in their shot selection, putting 6-of-12 shots on goal in its first win of the season. CU held the edge in corner kicks, 9-4.
The Jays will look to bounce back on Sunday at the Ameritas Classic, when they play host to Portland at 2:30 p.m. Portland defeated Southwest Missouri State, 2-0, in Friday's first match. SMS takes on UNLV at noon to start Sunday's action.
