DALLAS - Less than two months after being selected by the Dallas Burn in the fourth round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, former Creighton soccer standout, David Wagenfuhr, has signed a professional contract and has made the 18-man Burn roster for the upcoming 2004 MLS season.
The collegiate All-American has started all three matches for Dallas on its current exhibition trip in Spain. The Burn are 1-1-1 in La Manga Cup with one game remaining in the challenge. The Burn will return to Dallas this Saturday.
Wagenfuhr’s selection in the MLS SuperDraft marked the ninth consecutive season a Creighton player has been taken in the MLS Draft. Brian Kamler was picked in the initial 1996 MLS Draft and at least one Bluejay has been selected in every draft since. No other program in the NCAA has had at least one player selected in each MLS Draft.
Wagenfuhr became the 12th Creighton men’s soccer player drafted by Major League Soccer when he was taken in the fourth round by the Burn in the SuperDraft on January 16. The three-time all-Midwest region player closed out his spectacular Bluejay career as the all-time leader in games played at Creighton.
The Colorado Springs, Colo., native was named a first-team All-American by CollegeSoccerNews.com and was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Midwest Region First-Team for the third consecutive season, just the fifth CU men’s soccer player to earn first-team all-region honors on three occasions.
The midfielder/defender ended his Bluejay career as the all-time leader in matches played, starting 89 of the record 90 contests in which he appeared. His 25 career assists rank seventh all-time in school history and he is one of eight Bluejays to earn first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference honors three times in his career. The talented left-footed player was one of 15 players listed as semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy, which recognizes the top player in college soccer.
The Dallas Burn opens its regular-season on April 3 by playing host to the Colorado Rapids at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
