BALTIMORE, Md. - Julian Nash was selected by FC Dallas in the fourth round of Major League Soccer's SuperDraft Friday afternoon. The former Bluejay forward became the 13th player out of Creighton to be drafted by MLS. His selection gives the Bluejays the continued distinction of the only college soccer program in the nation to have at least one player selected in each draft of the league's existence.
Nash was a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy - college soccer's highest individual honor - as a senior. The powerful forward helped the 2004 Bluejays to a 14-4-2 record, while leading the team with nine assists and 21 points. Nash added six goals in his final year at Creighton, while earning first-team NSCAA all-Midwest Region and all-MVC honors.
The San Leandro, Calif., native closed out his career with 18 goals, 22 assists and 58 points. His best season came as a sophomore when he had a career-high eight goals and 24 points and the Jays advanced to the NCAA College Cup. Nash earned all-MVC second-team honors and was named to the MVC all-tournament team as a sophomore.
Nash's selection by FC Dallas (formerly Dallas Burn) marks the third straight season the club has selected a Bluejay in the fourth round of the draft. David Wagenfuhr was the 31st overall pick last year and the MVC's all-time leading scorer, All-American Mike Tranchilla, was the 34th overall selection in the 2003 draft. Nash was the 40th overall pick this year, the fourth player picked by Dallas.
Other MLS and Creighton soccer news emerged during the draft when former Bluejay standout and longtime San Jose Earthquake Richard Mulrooney was traded to FC Dallas. Mulrooney, an MLS all-star and U.S. National Team member, had been with San Jose since he was drafted by the team in 1999 and was the all-time games played leader in the organization.
