OMAHA, Neb. Freshman Byron Dacy and junior Jarod Tarver each scored twice in the first half as the 25th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team cruised past Eastern Illinois 5-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for each team Saturday night at Morrison Stadium. CU snapped a four-game winless streak with the victory and is now 5-2-3 on the year, while EIU falls to 3-6-1 on the season.
Dacy found the back of the net in the 16th minute to start the scoring onslaught. Tim Bohnenkamp served the ball to the middle of the field where Joan Carvajal headed the ball to Dacy and the rookie sent a blast from the top of the box past the EIU goalkeeper. Carvajal and Dacy hooked up again in the 39th minute on a corner kick, which Dacy knocked in the net on a header. Dacy now has a team-best four goals and 12 points on the season.
Tarver got into the act at the 42:13 mark, taking another feed from Carvajal to put CU up 3-0. Vince Odorisio also assisted the first Tarver tally. Then, just 1:39 later, Tarver beat the Panther keeper, Nick Alexander, for another score. The junior took a perfect through ball feed from Dacy to convert the goal in the 45th minute. Ryan Junge also assisted on the goal. Tarver now has three goals and 11 points on the year.
It was Junge's header in the 78th minute that concluded scoring in the match. Bohnenkamp sent a corner kick to Michael Kraus at the corner of the box and Kraus sent a blast toward the net that deflected off a EIU defender's head and made its way toward Junge. The goal was Junge's second of the season.
Carvajal's three assists established a Morrison Stadium record, while the Bluejays' nine assists and 19 points as a team also topped the former stadium records of five assists and 17 points set in a 6-0 win over UMKC on Nov. 22, 2003.
Matt Allen stopped six shots in goal to earn the shutout for CU, while lowering his goals against average to 0.94.
CU logged at least 20 shots for its third straight match, out-shooting EIU 24-16 on the night, led by Dacy's four attempts. EIU's Brad Earl unloaded five shots to lead all players.
The Bluejays will look to keep their offense going when they play host to ninth-ranked Missouri State on Wednesday at Morrison Stadium. The Bears have yet to lose this season, and enter next week's match up with an 8-0-2 record after topping Western Kentucky 4-2 Saturday night in MVC play. The Jays and Bears will kickoff at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
