OMAHA, Neb. -- Scores by Matt Wieland, Michael Kraus and Brian Biggerstaff lifted the Creighton men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Lafayette on Friday in NCAA Tournament play. With the win, CU advances to play at No. 6 Duke on Tuesday at 6 pm (Central).
The win was CU's fifth straight shutout, tying a school record, as the Jays improved to 13-4-3 on the season. The Leopards ended the 2005 campaign 13-5-2.
The two teams played evenly for the first third of the match before Matt Wieland scored on a header at 31:14. Andrew Peterson started the play by sending the ball towards the goal from near midfield. Once in the box, Byron Dacy redirected it with a header towards Wieland, and the senior finished it off with his fifth score of the season.
The Bluejays scored again five minutes later when Trevor Eastman headed a ball that deflected off Brian Biggerstaff's shoulder in the direction of Michael Kraus. Kraus slid through the ball and sent a shot off of Lafayette keeper Mike Tortora that trickled into the goal.
Biggerstaff would add a goal at 89:08, coming up with a loose ball and firing a one-timer to the left side of the goal from 20 yards, capping off Creighton's fourth consecutive home NCAA Tournament victory.
Matt Allen stopped all five shots directed on net to record his seventh shutout in goal this season for the Bluejays.
CU ended with a 16-11 shot advantage in a physical match that saw 32 fouls called and three yellow cards assessed to each team.
