OMAHA, Neb. -- For the second consecutive game Creighton's Michael Kraus scored the game-winning goal to lead the 15th-ranked Bluejays past Mercer 1-0 at the Diadora Challenge Sunday afternoon at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays (4-0-1) out-shot the Bears (1-5-0) 16-8 in the match, but converted just one chance in the 83rd minute. Kraus' third goal (and third game-winner) of the season came from seven yards out when he sent a left-footed shot past the Mercer keeper. Byron Dacy was credited with an assist on the tally at the 82:59 mark. For the second consecutive game, the Bluejay defense was the story, this time posting its first shutout of the season. Headed up by Matt Wieland's stellar play, the Jays allowed just eight shots, including only three on goal. Goalkeeper Matt Allen stopped all three Mercer shots he faced to pick up the shutout victory. The tournament tie-breaker criteria of goals allowed gives the Bluejays the tournament title, as the Jays allowed just one goal this weekend. Kraus was named the tournament MVP, while Wieland, Allen and defender Brian Kallman were also on the squad.
