OMAHA, Neb. - Matt Allen stopped a Drake penalty kick in the 60th minute and Ryan Junge scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute as the Creighton men's soccer team topped the Bulldogs 1-0 at a frigid Morrison Stadium Wednesday night in Missouri Valley Conference action. The win moves Creighton's unbeaten streak to five matches, while upping its overall mark to 8-3-3, 2-0-1 in MVC play. The victory was also Bob Warming's 150th as the Bluejay head coach.
Drake (3-7-4, 0-1-2 MVC), now winless in its last 11 matches, played a physical match in attempt to knock the Jays off their recent offensive groove. The Bulldogs were whistled for 24 fouls, compared to just 14 by the Jays, but it was a hard foul in the box by the Bluejays that set up the Bulldog penalty kick at 59:53.
Peter Kariotis attempted to go toward Allen's left, but the junior goalkeeper from Omaha Burke was up for the challenge and turned away the chance, bringing the chilled Bluejay fans wind chill of 32 at kick off to their feet.
It was then Junge's turn to warm up the crowd. The senior from Omaha Millard West found himself alone just outside the top of the box in the 70th minute. He used the open space to blast a left footed shot across the goal mouth and into the upper right 90 for his first goal of the season at 69:32.
Junge continued to be a factor as the Drake offense heightened its attack, as his sliding tackles in the box kept the Bulldogs from mounting any great scoring chances. The CU defense and Allen, who stopped three in net, recorded their sixth shutout of the season.
With a 1-0 Missouri State (2-1-1) loss at Evansville Wednesday, the Bluejays remain the only unbeaten team in conference play, with three MVC contests remaining.
Creighton hits the road for an MVC match against Eastern Illinois this Saturday. Kick off with the Panthers is set for 1 p.m. in Charleston.
