MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Byron Dacy scored twice and the Bluejays held off one of the highest scoring offenses in the NCAA as Creighton topped the 17th-ranked Memphis Tigers 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The key in-region, non-conference victory moves the Bluejays to 7-3-3 on the season.
Creighton wasted little time in getting on the board, when senior Jarod Tarver scored his first goal of the season just 3:09 into the match. Tarver headed in a crossing pass from fellow senior and Memphis native Michael Kraus. Just 93 seconds passed before the Bluejays went up 2-0 on Dacy's first score of the match. Pietari Holopainen set up the play with a take away on an errant pass from the Memphis goalkeeper, and Dacy bent the ball around the keeper from the top of the box.
The Tigers (8-4-0) cut into the CU lead in the 35th minute when Kevin Walsh scored on a direct free kick from just outside the top of the box. For Walsh, who ranks among NCAA leaders in scoring, it was his seventh goal of the year. After picking up a yellow card in the fifth minute of play, he would pick up a second yellow in the 74th minute, forcing him to miss the final 16 minutes of play and he will be out of action in a key regional and conference match against UAB next week.
The Bluejays scored early in the second half again, as Dacy took a feed from Andrew Peterson to score his team-leading fourth goal of the year and put the Jays up 3-1 in the 51st minute. Kraus had a chance to put the Jays up 4-1 late in the match on a penalty kick, but Tyler Strom, in net for Memphis, made the stop.
Frank Judice would add a late goal for Memphis, but it was too little, too late for the Tigers in their second loss of the week.
"I thought this was a huge game in the region for us, with them ranked second in the Midwest," said head coach Bob Warming. "I'm proud of our guys for going on the road and getting a big win. We came out flying at the start of both halves and scored the goals we needed to in order to get the win."
Dacy, a preseason National Player of the Year candidate and last year's Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, is returning to form after being slowed by injury early this year. The sophomore was held without a point in CU's first nine matches this season, but now has two multiple goal contests in the last four matches. He is tied for the team lead with four goals and 11 points. Over the past two seasons, CU is now 15-1-0 when Dacy registers a point, and just 7-7-6 when he does not make the score sheet.
Creighton returns to MVC play on Wednesday when it plays host to Drake. Kick off at Morrison Stadium is set for 7 p.m. Live stats and live video will be available at www.gocreighton.com.
