TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State used a 16-4 run to open the second half, after Creighton had played within two points of the Sycamores in the first half, as ISU handed the Bluejays their second straight loss to open Missouri Valley Conference play, 89-62, at the Hulman Center on Sunday afternoon.
Creighton (3-10, 0-2 MVC) scored the first four points of the second half to take its only lead of the game, up 35-33, but the Sycamores (9-4, 2-0 MVC) responded with the next 16 points to take control of the contest. CU and ISU played even in the first half, as the Jays never led, but did manage seven ties in the opening 20 minutes. CU out-worked ISU on the glass in the first half, 26-17, including 13 offensive rebounds for the Jays. The Bluejays were able to use those offensive boards to out-score the Sycamores 10-0 on second-chance points.
CU's rebounding and ability to handle the ISU press in the first half kept the game close, but the Sycamores turned up their defense in the second half and the MVC's highest scoring team scored 56 points in the second half to pull away with the blowout victory.
Junior Sara Cain led the Jays with 14 points, while freshman Sam Schuett added 13. The rookie made all three of her three-point attempts and made 4-of-5 shots from the field. Sophomore Michelle Kaus led all players with a career-high 10 rebounds from her guard slot, also finishing with nine points and four assists. Ally Thrall dished seven assists to lead the team.
Laura Rudolphi led all ISU players with 22 points, while Rachel Maenpaa added 19.
The Bluejays will look to snap their 0-2 MVC start when they play host to Northern Iowa on Thursday at the Civic Auditorium.
