OMAHA, Neb. Creighton pitchers Marc Lewis and Adam Schaecher and outfielder Chase Odenreider were chosen today on day two 2006 First-Year Player Draft. The trio joins Zach Daeges, who was taken in the sixth round yesterday by the Boston Red Sox, as CU's four selections this year, the most since five Creighton players were picked in 1995.
Lewis was taken in the 26th round, 782nd overall, by the Milwaukee Brewers. The junior will have the option to return to Creighton for his senior season or sign with the Brewers organization before attending classes in the fall.
A first-team all-conference selection this season, Lewis went 7-0 with a 2.81 ERA for the Jays. After undergoing Tommy John Surgery in May 2005 that limited his innings early in the season, the junior came on strong in the second half of the year and finished the conference season with a 6-0 record and 1.72 ERA over 47 innings in his eight Valley starts. Creighton was victorious in his final 13 starts of the year.
Schaecher was the 928th overall selection, going in the 31st round to the Texas Rangers. He led the Jays with 15 starts this season, finishing 5-3 with a 2.54 ERA. His earned run average ranks 55th nationally. Schaecher ends his career 11th all-time at Creighton with 243.2 innings pitched, accumulating a 15-9 record and 3.99 ERA in 64 appearances (40 starts) over his four seasons. The Omaha native was named an honorable mention all-MVC pitcher this season.
This is the first year since 1994 that two Creighton pitchers have been chosen in the draft.
Odenreider went in the 49th round as the 1,472nd overall pick to the New York Yankees. The Omaha native was CU's second-leading hitter this year with a .315 average and led the team with 64 hits. He belted six home runs and struck out only 15 times in 203 at bats. Defensively, Odenreider recorded 16 outfield assists over his final two seasons at CU, and was a second-team all-MVC selection this year. Odenreider finished his Creighton career with a .295 batting average and 86 RBI in 156 games.
