MADISON, Wis. - Michael Kraus scored his second straight game-winning goal, propelling the Creighton men's soccer team to its second consecutive 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon against
Byron Dacy earned a corner kick for the Bluejays by sealing off his defender to set up the game-winning score early in the first overtime. Pietari Holopainen took the corner kick and sent it to the far post where redshirt freshman Chris Schuler leaped over his defender to win the header and send it back into the box. Kraus took Schuler's feed and one-touched it into the net for his second game-winner of the weekend just 2:14 into overtime.
"For us this was a great weekend for a couple of reasons," said head coach Bob Warming after his team moved its unbeaten streak to four matches. "First we beat a team on Friday night in Wisconsin-Milwaukee that had not lost at this tournament since 1997, and beating them was a great confidence builder. Second we beat the host school today in a very well played match and it was rewarding for us to get that victory."
Matt Allen and the Bluejay defense combined for their third straight shutout, with Allen earning all-tournament team honors. Defender Andrew Peterson was also named to the all-tournament team, along with Bluejay goal-scorer Kraus. Allen did not record an inflated number of saves in the shutouts (four on Sunday), but it was his clearing of crossing passes and potential scoring opportunities along with his leadership in the back that earned him all-tourney recognition.
"We knew coming in that we had given up too many goals in the first few games (seven goals first three games; zero in the last three)," said Warming. "Turning that around and getting three straight shutouts is important, because while it's great to score a lot of goals, we feel we are better suited to win championships by posting shutouts."
The Bluejays return home and open a season-long five-match home stand next weekend when they play host to the 10th annual Diadora Challenge. CU hosts
