
Jays Upset Kansas, 1-0 in Front of Record Women's Soccer Crowd

OMAHA, Neb.- The Jays pulled off the upset at Morrison Stadium in front of a record crowd of 1,251 fans on Friday night in the victory over Kansas, 1-0. Not more than two weeks ago, KU was ranked as high as No. 18 in the national polls and had upset No. 12 Duke. Katy Peetz scored the game winner for the Jays, it was her first goal of the season.
After a 0-0 score at the half the Jays entered the second period more aggressive, attacking KU and putting pressure on KU's defenders. Peetz broke the 0-0 tie in the 51st minute on a long throw in from Sam Russell. Peetz chipped the ball in from five feet out past the outstretched hands of the KU goalkeeper.
"I couldn't be more proud because we were able to play our style, an aggressive and attacking style of play," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We were mentally ready for the challenge and were ready to compete tonight."
CU goalkeeper Valerie Zimmerer picked up her third victory and her second shutout of the season. KU goalkeeper Julie Hanley had three saves on the evening and dropped her record to 6-4-0. KU outshot the Jays12-9 and out cornered CU 7-3.
Conference play opens up on Saturday, Oct. 7 as the Jays battle Illinois State at Morrison Stadium. The Jays have had some trouble with Illinois State, CU has not defeated the Redbirds since 2002. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
