
No. 6 Rutgers Too Much for Women's Basketball

PISCATAWAY, N.J. ? Sara Cain and Ally Thrall had 10 points each to lead the Bluejays as the Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 62-43 loss at sixth-ranked Rutgers Friday night. The Bluejays shot just 22 percent in dropping their 13th consecutive decision to a nationally-ranked foe.
Rutgers (1-1) opened the game on a 15-5 run, as the Bluejays (1-1) struggled to make shots in the opening 10 minutes. The Scarlet Knights extended their lead to 11 points, up 29-18 at the half. Creighton made just four field goals in the first half, making just 13.8 percent (4-of-29) of their shots from the field in that span, including 1-of-13 from three-point range. The Jays stayed in the game in the first half, thanks to making 9-of-10 free-throws.
After a Rutgers free-throw made it 30-18 early in the second half, the Bluejays strung together a 17-7 run with hot three-point shooting. CU drew within two after Tyrai Bronson's three-pointer made the score 37-35 in favor of the Scarlet Knights just over five minutes into the half. The run was started on back-to-back three-pointers by Cain. The trifectas were the first two of the seniors career. Thrall also hit a pair of three-pointers during the run.
The Jays went into a funk after that, as they scored just two points over the next nine minutes, while the Scarlet Knights moved to a 54-37 lead. CU improved its shooting in the second half, making 30 percent from the floor and 35.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Jays ended just 13-of-59 for 22 percent, while their 6-of-27 performance from three-point range was good for a 22.2 percent clip. CU did make 11-of-12 free-throws for 91.7 percent.
CU forced 20 Rutgers turnovers, while committing just 16, and swiped 10 steals in the game. Rutgers out-rebounded the Jays 44-32.
Cain finished 4-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-6 from three-point range for 10 points. Thrall was 3-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-4 from long range for her 10 points. Kristina Voss topped Creighton with five rebounds, while adding six points and two steals and a 4-for-4 effort from the line.
Rutgers, the 2007 NCAA runner-up, was led by 12 points from Essence Carson and Epiphanny Prince. Prince added a game-high seven rebounds, while Carson chipped in four assists.
Creighton returns home to play Memphis Monday. The Jays and Tigers will tip off at 7:05 p.m. at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The game will be broadcast on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
