OMAHA, Neb. ? Senior goalkeeper Matt Allen of the Creighton men's soccer team has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Midwest Region First-Team and tabbed a third-team All-American by College Soccer News. Fellow seniors Tim Bohnenkamp and Tony Schmitz join Allen on the all-region first-team, while Chris Schuler and Andrei Gotsmanov were tabbed to the all-region second-team.
Allen, the only two-time Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, concluded his record setting career in goal for the Bluejays earlier this month. The Omaha Burke product established school career records with 26 shutouts and 6,531 minutes played. He ranks second in CU career history with 43 wins, 260 saves and 0.83 goals against average. This year he played all 1,930 minutes in net for the Bluejays, with a 12-3-5 record, 75 saves, seven shutouts and a 0.79 goals against average.
Bohnenkamp led the team with six assists this season, concluding his career with 22 helpers. The Millard South graduate added two goals for 10 points this year, while he scored the game-winning goal in Creighton's NCAA Tournament win over SMU. The senior midfielder was named to the MVC second-team as a senior. He established a Morrison Stadium career record with 15 assists.
A third metro area product, Schmitz joined Bohnenkamp as a midfield honoree. The Skutt Catholic graduate ranked second on the team with five assists and 13 points and third with four goals. A first-team all-MVC honoree this year, the senior began the year as a back, moved to a forward position at the beginning of the season and proved his versatility yet again by playing a majority of the year in the midfield for the Jays.
Schuler, a first-team all-MVC back this year, played a key role in Creighton's defensive success. Charged with marking the opponent's best attacker throughout most of the year, the sophomore helped CU to seven shutouts and a 0.79 goals against average, while adding two assists from the back.
Gotsmanov was a second-team all-MVC performer in his first year with the Bluejays. The midfielder, who was an all-Big East honoree as a freshman at St. John's in 2004, emerged as CU's leading scorer this year. The junior tied for the team-lead with six goals and topped the team with 17 points this year.
Creighton, which appeared in its 16th straight NCAA Tournament this year, won its second-straight and eighth regular-season MVC title and finished the year 12-3-5 after advancing to the third round of the NCAA postseason.
