OMAHA, Neb. - Southern Illinois shot 50 percent from three-point range in downing the Creighton women's basketball team, 67-56, at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped Creighton's five-game home winning streak and dropped the Bluejays to 10-15 overall, 7-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The first-place Salukis improved to 17-9, 13-2 in the MVC.
The Bluejays fell behind 5-0 to start the contest, before scoring the next six points to take the lead. SIU answered with a Carlai Moore bucket to take the early lead, 7-6. The Jays would reclaim the lead before SIU the scored seven unanswered points to go up 17-11. The Bluejays would battle back to take one more lead, up 22-21 with 4:09 to play in the first half following a Sam Schuett three-pointer.
Southern Illinois closed the first half on a 10-0 run capped by one of Erin Pauk's four three-pointers on the day with 15 seconds to play in the half. SIU led 31-22 at the half, making 5-of-11 three-pointers, compared to just 1-of-8 by the Jays.
CU slowly cut into the nine-point halftime deficit, closing within three points on four different occasions, but could get no closer. Down 49-46 after an Ally Thrall layup with 7:03 to play, the Salukis then held the Bluejays without a field goal for nearly the final seven minutes of play before a Chevelle Herring layup with 38 seconds to play ended the drought.
The Salukis finished the game 9-of-18 from three-point range, including 4-for-5 performances from Pauk and Jayme Sweere. Sweere and Jasmine Gibson finished with a game-high 16 points for SIU, while Erica Smith led all players with 13 rebounds. It was SIU's ability to hit shots and limit CU's good looks at the basket that helped the Salukis sweep the regular-season series from the Jays for the second straight year.
MVC Newcomer of the Year candidate Megan Neuvirth led the Bluejays with 14 points and 12 rebounds for her second career double-double. Her 12 boards were a career-best, as were her five steals, four coming in the first half. No other Bluejay scored in double figures, while Schuett finished with 10 rebounds.
CU out-rebounded SIU, 36-34, including an 18-10 edge on the offensive glass. The Jays also out-scored SIU in the paint, 38-18, but shooting percentages proved to be the difference. Along with its stellar three-point shooting, SIU finished 46.9 percent from the floor and 85.7 at the line, while CU made 37.3 percent of its shots, 23.1 percent on threes and just 56.3 at the free-throw line.
The Bluejays will hit the road for the final time in Valley play next weekend when they play at Missouri State and Wichita State. The Jays and Bears will tip off in Springfield at 7:05 p.m. on Friday night. The game can be heard live on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
