Beaumont, Texas - A 12-run third inning by the Lamar Cardinals propelled them to a 12-3 win over the Creighton baseball team Saturday in day two of the Cardinal Classic at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals (5-3) scored 12 runs on nine hits in the inning, including nine off CU right-handed starter, Zak Moore, as the Bluejays (2-3) ran into a hot lineup that had scored 16 runs the previous night against Northwestern.
Lamar left-hander Allen Harrington (1-2) earned the win on the day going six innings allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out two.
Moore (0-1), whose previous career game-high for runs was two, was saddled with the loss as he went 2.1 innings giving up the nine runs on 10 hits, but tied a career high striking out three. CU reliever Matt Bowers would be charged with the other three runs in the third inning, as he pitched the last third of the inning giving up those three runs on two hits.
CU would start the bottom of the third on a positive note with
Michael Ambort would get intentionally walked to load the bases, as Dan Hernandez delivered a 2-run single to left field. Jeff Vickers followed with an RBI single to right field as then Brian Lloyd walked to load the bases.
David Moore and Travis Dunson each had RBI singles, and Kanaby walked with the bases loaded to drive in a run. Baker cleared the bases with a three-run double to left field. Then Collin DeLome followed with an RBI triple down the right field line and Ambort drove in DeLome with a sacrifice fly to center field to close out the scoring.
The Bluejays wouldn't give in though despite being down 12-0 as they came back in the top of the fourth scoring two runs on Harrington. Darin Ruf would lead off with a double to left, before Andrew Small drove him in on another RBI double to left field. Jimmy Baker would then drive in Small with an RBI ground out to make it 12-2.
CU would then add a run in the top of the seventh inning off Lamar relief pitcher Scott Meyer to keep the game from ending. Chris Gradoville hit an RBI single to left field that scored Tyson Parks from third, after Parks and Robbie Knight had reached base after being hit by Meyer. Gradoville would finish the day 2-for-5 with an RBI as he and designated hitter Brett Mieras, were the only Jays to collect multiple hits on the afternoon. Mieras was 2-for-2 in only his second appearance with CU after transferring from
Meyer pitched the final 3.0 innings for the Cardinals giving up a run on two hits while striking out three. The Bluejays used six pitchers on the day as Teddy Ogilvie, Bob Lackovic, Chris Marchildon and David Merchant all made appearances out of the bullpen.
