OMAHA, Neb. - Megan Neuvirth's near triple-double was not enough to power the Creighton women's basketball team past Indiana State Thursday night at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, as the Sycamores topped the Bluejays 69-64. Neuvirth recorded her third double-double of the season with a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds, while she added a career-best seven steals in the losing effort for Creighton.
Indiana State (18-10, 11-6 MVC) jumped out to an 18-7 lead in the game as it made seven of its first 10 field goal attempts, while the Jays (11-17, 8-9 MVC) struggled out of the gates, hitting just 3-of-13 to open play. Once CU settled in, the Jays went on a 12-2 run to close within one with 8:27 to play and then took its first lead of the game when Chevelle Herring's layup put CU up 26-25 with 4:37 to play in the opening half.
The Jays would go up by three and then fall down by four before scoring the final four points of the half to go into the locker rooms tied at 32-32. ISU shot 48.3 percent in the opening half, compared to just 34.2 by the Jays, but CU owned a 12-2 advantage in second-chance points at the half.
After the first half witnessed two lead changes and two ties, the second half was even more back-and-forth, with eight lead changes in the final 20 minutes.
Creighton's final lead of the game came when Sara Cain made one of her two buckets on the night with 5:39 to go, putting CU up 60-58. But the Sycamores tied the game on their next possession and closed the game on a 11-4 run to claim the five-point win. The Bluejays had a chance to tie the game late, but Tyrai Bronson's three-point attempt with 12 seconds to play was short off the iron and ISU sealed the victory with a pair of free-throws.
Neuvirth, a redshirt freshman, continued her push for MVC Newcomer of the Year, with her impressive game. Along with her near triple-double, she also tied for the team-lead with three assists. Herring finished with 12 points, shooting 6-of-9 off the bench. Michelle Kaus added 11 points, making 3-of-6 three-pointers.
Freshman of the Year front-runner Kelsey Luna led ISU with 14 points, making 4-of-7 three-pointers. Angela Phillips added 13 points and game-high six assists, while Laura Rudolphi chipped in with 11 points and nine boards for the visitors.
ISU out-rebounded CU 37-33, including 18-10 in the second half. The Jays forced 23 ISU turnovers and committed only 12 miscues themselves. It was shooting that made the difference, as ISU shot 51 percent from the floor and CU made just 37.3 percent of its shots in ISU's sixth-straight win in the series. Cain finished 2-of-16 from the field.
