OMAHA, Neb. ? Creighton softball third baseman Jamie Reiss
has been named an ESPN The Magazine Third-Team Academic All-American as
voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA) and announced Wednesday. She was also tabbed to the
All-Senior All-America Team as selected in balloting for the Lowe's
Senior CLASS Award. Reiss recently completed her four-year career at
Creighton by helping lead the Bluejays to a Missouri Valley Conference
regular-season title and their fourth Missouri Valley Conference
tournament championship in the past five years.
Reiss, who owned a 3.82 cumulative grade point average in public relations, was also a first-team all-MVC Scholar-Athlete and first-team academic all-district honoree. Off the diamond she was also one of 10 national finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which honors excellence on and off the field, earning second-team All-Senior All-America honors from the organization.
On the field, Reiss enjoyed a career-year in her fourth year as the Bluejays' starting third baseman. She was honored on the all-MVC first-team and MVC All-Tournament Team for her outstanding play. Reiss hit a career-best and team-leading .364, while she also topped the team with 35 runs, 67 hits, four triples and 104 assists. She established career-highs in nearly every offensive category, including doubles, triples, home runs and RBI.
In her career, the Papillion-La Vista graduate started 212 of the 214 games in which she appeared, while hitting .294 for her career. During her senior season, she put together a 17-game hitting streak to rank as one of the longest in school history. She went 3-for-7 (.429) at the MVC Tournament, leading off both games with a single and scoring the first-run of each Bluejay win at the event.
Reiss is the fifth Bluejay softball player to earn academic All-America honors, joining Jean Tierney (1983), Christy Lunceford (1997), Heidi Geier (1998, 1999) and Christine Fukumoto (2005).
The Bluejays finished the season 40-14-1 after appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years and winning at least 40 games for the third time in the last four seasons. Creighton tied a school record with 19 MVC wins and captured its first MVC regular-season title since 2000. Reiss was one of four Bluejay seniors on the championship team.
