Former Creighton soccer player Andrew Peterson has signed a contract with the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer, becoming the fourth player from the 2006 Bluejay men's soccer squad to sign a professional contract. Peterson joins former CU teammate Ryan Junge as members of the Crew and along with Michael Kraus (Kansas City Wizards), he is the third Bluejay from last year's roster already on an MLS squad.
Peterson was drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Thunder of the USL First Division earlier this year and had been playing for the Cleveland City Stars of the USL Second Division before appearing in a Reserve Division match for the Crew last month.
The Plymouth, Minn., native was a second-team all-Missouri Valley Conference selection in 2006 as a senior. A defender, he started 16 of the 21 matches he appeared in as a senior, dishing a career-best four assists. The left-footed back was a four-year starter, starting 74 of the 85 career matches in which he appeared.
As a junior he was named second-team NSCAA All-Midwest Region and named to the MVC all-tournament team in helping the Jays to the tournament title. The Bluejays twice ranked in the NCAA top 25 in defense in his time at Creighton, including 19th in the country with a 0.77 goals against average in 2003. The CU defense posted 33 shutouts during his four-years, including 10 in 2005.
In addition to the trio of Jays from the 2006 squad in the MLS, Pietari Holopainen is playing professionally in his homeland of Finland. Other former Bluejays currently in the MLS include Mehdi Ballouchy (Real Salt Lake), Richard Mulrooney and Brian Mullan of the Houston Dynamo and David Wagenfuhr of FC Dallas.
CU won its seventh MVC regular-season title, 10th MVC tournament title and advanced to its 15th straight NCAA Tournament, finishing 13-5-3 in 2006. The Bluejays begin the 2007 season with a home exhibition match against Ohio State on Aug. 18.
