Omaha, Neb. - The women's soccer team dominated North Dakota 6-0, Tuesday night at Morrison Stadium. Annemarie Hengel scored her first two career goals as well as an assist.
Most of Creighton's scoring came in the first half as the team scored four times in the first 45 minutes. It was the most goals in a half since Sept. 30, 2005 when the Bluejays scored five times in the second half against Northern Arizona.
Mary Zapapas got the home team on the board right away, as she put a free kick in the left corner of the goal for her third goal of the season. The next two Bluejays goals came just more than two minutes apart as Macy Mauer and Marcy Gans scored in the 15th and 17th minutes respectively. Mauer's goal, her second on the year, came off an Emily Orbell corner kick. Gans then converted her second penalty kick of the season for her 14th goal of the year.
Annemarie Hengel had the most creative goal of the first half, scoring in the 36th minute for her first career goal. She took a ball just outside the goal box, dribbled around two defenders, then ripped a shot into the upper right corner after turning her body back around to the goal.
In the second half Nicole DeLue received a nice crossing pass from Hengel in the 55th minute for her third goal of the season, as well as Hengel's first career assist. Hengel then capped the Bluejay scoring by receiving a long Jordan Bruch lob pass in front of the goalie, before putting it in the back of the net in the 66th minute, for Hengel's fifth point of the night.
Defensively Creighton had a bit of a new look, as freshman Alicia Montgomery made her first career start. She stopped five shots for her first career shutout, and the sixth of the season for the Bluejays.
The six goals scored were the most in Morrison Stadium history, and the most by Creighton in any game Sept. 30, 2005, when the team scored six against Northern Arizona.
Next up for the Bluejays will be MVC leading Evansville on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Morrison Stadium. Evansville comes into the match with a record of 10-3-2 overall, and 4-1-0 in conference play. Creighton will enter with a record of 11-5-0, and 2-2-0 in MVC matchups.
“It's a monumental game,” said Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson. “It's going to be senior day as well and all the things that go along with that.”
