OMAHA, Neb. ? Senior Andrei Gotsmanov and sophomore Kyle Deremer of the Creighton men's soccer team have been named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for their play in the Bluejays' 2-0 win over No. 24 Drake last week. In addition to the conference honor, Gotsmanov was also tabbed the National Player of the Week by College Soccer News for his two-goal performance.
Gotsmanov, a MAC Hermann Trophy candidate, enjoyed his final regular-season home match at Morrison Stadium by netting both goals in CU's 2-0 win over 24th-ranked Drake last Saturday. His first tally came in the first half on a perfectly bent free kick around the Drake wall and past shielded DU goalkeeper Michael Drozd. He then touched in his second goal in the second half to secure the victory.
The Bluejay attacker has now scored five of Creighton's last six goals and owns Morrison Stadium records for goals in a season (8) and a career (13). Gotsmanov is now tied for the league-lead with nine goals and three game-winners.
Deremer and the Bluejay defense continued their amazing run with a shutout of the 16th-ranked offense in the NCAA last Saturday. Drake entered the game ranked first in the MVC, scoring better than two goals per game, and the Jays blanked the Bulldogs to tie the Creighton record with their 11th shutout of the season. From his right center back position, the Omaha Millard North product helped lead the Bluejay effort in shutting down the high-powered DU attack. His ability to slow any potential counter attacks and his clearance of crosses were key in the blanking.
Creighton now leads the NCAA with a 0.27 goals against average, while they maintain their NCAA lead in shutout percentage. CU's 78.6 shutout percentage (11 shutouts in 14 matches) is tops in the nation, as the Jays have allowed only four goals all year.
The third-ranked Bluejays (11-1-2, 3-0-1 MVC) conclude the regular-season this Saturday at Eastern Illinois (5-9-3, 0-4-0 MVC). The Bluejays and Panthers kickoff at 2:00 p.m., in Charleston.
