OMAHA, Neb. -- After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Missouri State soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament after winning a shootout against host Creighton, 4-2, on late Wednesday night.
Though the match will go down in the record books as a tie, Missouri State (10-6-2) advances to the semifinals and will play second-seeded Evansville (11-4-2) on Friday at 5 pm. Creighton ends its season at 12-6-1.
The loss marks the first time in Creighton history that the Bluejays have not made it to the semifinals of the MVC Tournament, a streak spanning 13 years.
The 0-0 tie was the first scoreless game since Oct. 5 of last season, when the Bluejays and Bears also played 110 scoreless minutes at Morrison Stadium.
Missouri State won the shootout, 4-2, despite Jordan Reppell's opening shot being saved by CU's Kristen Casey to start the penalty kick segment. However, Bears' goalkeeper Jackie Jasper picked up her teammate by stopping CU's all-time leading goal scorer, Marcy Gans, to keep it scoreless.
Each of the next four shooters would alternate scores. MSU got goals in that time from Jenna Dobkins and Jenna Laughlin, while CU's Lindsay Vaught and Shawn Magrum both converted.
Losing in a shootout, was a new experience for Creighton's seniors, as the team has not lost in a shootout since Nov. 9, 2003 against Illinois State.
In the fourth round of the penalty kicks, Allison Osmundson found the back of the net to give MSU a 3-2 lead. An attempt by CU's Emily Orbell would bounce off the post and deflect wide as MSU preserved its one-goal lead. The Bears then clinched the match when junior Samantha Aguilar scored to conclude the defensive-minded contest.
“I thought our back four did a great job,” Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson said. “We adjusted to their shape and nullified their front three. All five of our seniors fought hard, we just weren't good enough and that was disappointing.”
Senior goalkeeper Casey closed her career with the 18th shutout of her career, tied for third in school history. She is one of five graduating seniors for the Bluejays.
