OMAHA, Neb. ? For the third time this season, junior Chevelle Herring poured in a career-high point total against a Big 12 opponent, but it wasn't enough to help the Creighton women's basketball team overcome the loss of another starter due to injury, as Kansas (7-1) got by the Bluejays 59-58 in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Herring poured in a game-high 31 points, as starting center Kristina Voss missed the game with an ankle injury suffered in CU's previous game.
Kelsey Woodard's only three-pointer of the game 16 seconds into the second half gave the Bluejays their largest lead of the game, up 34-30. After that make, the game was tied four more times before KU built to its largest lead of the second half, up 49-46 with 2:19 left. Ivana Catic knocked down a pair of free-throws after Megan Neuvirth fouled out, giving KU the three-point lead.
Herring responded with two free-throws and a runner in the paint to give the Jays a 50-49 lead with less than 90 seconds to play in regulation. KU answered with a jumper to reclaim the one-point lead. The Jays tied it at 51 when Herring made 1-of-2 free-throws with 53 seconds to play. Sade Morris put KU up 53-51 with 37 seconds left. Herring was fouled after tying the game at 53 with a layup with 25 seconds left. She missed the freebie and KU came away with the rebound, but turned the ball over with six seconds left, only to see the Jays unable to heave a game-winning attempt.
The Jays (2-6) stayed with the hot-hand, as Herring gave the Jays a 55-53 lead with the first basket of overtime. After KU tied it, the Jays took a one-point lead when Kelsey Crites hit 1-of-2 free-throws with less than three minutes to play. KU then drained four straight free-throws to take a three-point lead with 14 seconds left. Herring was fouled with five seconds to play, and her two free-throws brought the score to 59-58 in favor of KU. CU did not get a steal on the inbounds and dropped the one-point decision.
Herring finished 11-of-18 from the field, 2-of-3 from three-point range and 7-of-9 at the free-throw line for her first career 30-point game and the first 30-point game by a Bluejay since Sam Schuett's 30-point performance at Nebraska last November. In five games against the Big 12 this season, Herring averaged 22.6 points. In all five Bluejay games with Big 12 foes this year, Herring was the game's leading scorer.
Freshman DaNae Moore led all players with a career-best 10 rebounds. Neuvirth finished with eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals before fouling out late in regulation.
Danielle McCray led KU with 16 points and seven boards.
KU shot 48 percent in the first half, but was just 26.7 percent after halftime. The Jays shot 71.4 percent at the free-throw line (10-14), but missed two shots at the stripe in the final minute of regulation and one in overtime.
Creighton is off for a week for finals, before returning to the court at home against UC Davis next Saturday at 1:05 p.m., and a Sunday game against Colorado State.
NOTES: Creighton went over a seven-minute stretch without guard Kelsey Woodard in the lineup in the second half, while she received stitches above her right eye following a collision with McCray underneath the basket ... Voss' injury is not expected to be season-ending, while the Jays are without Michelle Kaus (knee) and Sam Schuett (ankle) for the season ... Herring scored then career-highs with 19 points against Nebraska (Nov. 17) and 24 points against Iowa State (Nov. 23).
