Creighton jumped out to an
early 2-0 lead as sophomore Robbie Knight doubled to lead off the game, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt
by junior Vicente Cafaro and scored
on an RBI groundout by junior Darin Ruf.
In the top of the second inning, senior Joe Servais was hit by a pitch and came around to score on an RBI single by sophomore
T.J. Roemmich.
Creighton junior right
fielder Nick Nordgren evened the
score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run, the first of
the season by a Bluejay hitter. CU then pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of
the fifth when Soto reached on an error, was sacrificed over to second, then
scored after a passed ball and a throwing error by WSU catcher Greg Lagreid.
The Cougars then tallied the
tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth, using four hits in the inning to take the
5-4 lead. WSU's bullpen then shut down the Bluejay offense and Cougar closer
Russ Humes came in to get a bases-loaded groundout to end the eighth and
retired CU in order in the ninth to pick up his first save.
The Jays will play a
three-game series at Tennessee-Martin next weekend, beginning with a 2 p.m.
game on Friday, Feb. 29.
