
Bluejays Send Seniors Out With 87-74 Win Over Indiana State

OMAHA, Neb. ? Senior Sara Cain led all players with a season-high 22 points to guide the Creighton women's basketball team to an 87-74 victory over Indiana State at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Sunday afternoon. Fellow senior Ally Thrall added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists as the senior duo played in their final regular-season home game and helped the Bluejays improve to 11-1 at home this season.
Indiana State (12-14, 6-10 MVC) scored the first basket and led 5-3 after an Angela Phillips three-pointer, but the Bluejays (18-9, 11-5 MVC) answered with the next two buckets and never trailed again. With the Jays leading 24-17 midway through the first half, CU scored a quick eight straight points to move ahead by 15 with 9:15 left in the first half. Creighton led by as many as 17, up 45-28, with 3:44 left in the opening half, before claiming a 47-37 halftime lead.
The Sycamores would not go away in the second half, as CU built its lead back to 17 when it led 60-43 with 13:34 left in the game. ISU scored 12 straight points to get within five with 9:28 to play, but could get no closer, as CU responded with eight consecutive points and led 68-55 with 7:20 to play. Cain and Thrall would leave the Civic court to a loud ovation for the final time with 28 seconds to play and the Jays would hang on for a 13-point victory.
Cain, who had scored her previous season-high of 15 on Friday night, upped that to 22 on Sunday afternoon. She tied her career-high with three three-pointers, making 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The forward finished 8-for-14 from the field and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line, to go along with seven rebounds and four assists in just 24 minutes.
Thrall, one of 19 players in school history with 1,000 career points, made her 103rd career start on Sunday and finished with 10 points, seven boards and team-high five assists. Sam Schuett also dished five helpers, along with six rebounds, nine points and a pair of blocked shots.
Kelsey Woodard chipped in 12 points, making 4-of-5 shots from three-point range. She helped the Jays equal their season high with 12 three pointers and shoot 54.5 percent (12-22) from long range. CU also shot a season-high 51.7 percent from the field (30-58), dishing 23 assists on 30 field goals. The Jays out-rebounded the Sycamores 39-24 in the game, and out-scored ISU 20-4 on second chance points.
Angela Phillips led ISU with 21 points, making 5-of-9 three-pointers. Laura Rudolphi added 17 points and Leah Phillips had 11. Kara Schilli topped ISU with four assists.
