Graner led off the top of the fifth inning by taking a 2-0 offering from Danielle Glosson over the left center field fence for what proved to be the only run of the game.
Oltman struck out the first three batters of the game and set down the first five, before the Salukis put a runner on base in each of their final six at bats. SIU had two, two-out base runners reach in the second inning, only to be stranded. The Salukis left one on board in the third and then put a runner at second base with no outs in the third inning, only to leave two more runners on base in the frame. In both the fourth and fifth innings, the Salukis again put two-out runners on base, only to leave them both stranded.
SIU's Krystal Stein slapped a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but Oltman bounced back to strike out the final two batters of the game, including a called strike three to Tiffanie Dismore to end the game. SIU stranded eight runners in the 1-0 CU victory.
Oltman improved to 24-6 after game one, as she hurled a four-hit shutout. The right-hander fanned a season-high 12 SIU batters - the most times SIU has struck out in a game this year - in her ninth shutout of the season.
Glosson, a freshman hurler for SIU, was the tough-luck loser, falling to 5-6 on the year. She also allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out five, but allowed the solo home run to Graner in the fifth inning.
