OMAHA, Neb. ? The Creighton softball team secured at least a share of its second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title with a 4-0 victory over Indiana State Sunday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex. Sophomore pitcher Tara Oltman established a school record by recording her 29th victory of the year, as she hurled a four-hit shutout for the win. Creighton is now 40-14 overall and 18-3 in the MVC, having already equalled last season's win total.
The Bluejays did all their scoring in the first three innings. Jessi Jadlowski led off the game with an infield single for the Bluejays and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. She came around to score on a single by Renae Sinkler and an error by ISU left fielder Leslie Fakes to put the Jays up 1-0 after one.
Creighton added to its lead with a run in the second inning. Michelle Koch singled with one out and then stole second base. She would score on a pinch-hit RBI single by Cassidy Nee.
Two more Bluejay runs crossed the plate in the third inning, starting with a Bailey Dawson home run to leadoff the frame. Dawson lined the first pitch she saw over the right field wall for her ninth home run of the year. Koch would add an RBI single later in the frame to cap the scoring and give CU a 4-0 lead.
Indiana State (19-26-1, 7-13 MVC) compiled just four hits off of Oltman. Meredith Simpson and Lindsey Starwalt each finished 2-for-3 to account for all of the ISU offense. Katie Armour (4-10) started and lasted just two-plus innings, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) in the loss for the Sycamores.
Oltman, meanwhile, picked up her second shutout of the series, third of the week and 12th of the season. The right-hander struck out five and walked three in picking up her school record 29th win of the season.
Creighton finished with 10 hits in the game, led by Koch, who finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
CU's regular-season title is its second straight and fifth in the MVC, having also won the Valley title in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
The Bluejays need just one victory in their season-ending three-game series with Missouri State to stake sole claim of the MVC title. The Jays and Bears play a three-game set beginning Saturday with a noon doubleheader, in which CU's three seniors will be honored between games. CU and MSU conclude the regular-season on Sunday at noon.
