OMAHA, Neb. ? Five different goal scorers found the back of the net as the sixth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team opened its exhibition season with a 5-0 victory over the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Club Team Friday night at Morrison Stadium. Junior Jeff Thayer scored one goal and assisted two in the Bluejay dominated contest.
“I thought it was great of the Nebraska Club Team to help us out with an early-season exhibition,” said Creighton head coach Bob Warming following the match. “We wanted to play three kinds of games in the preseason; one like tonight, in which we had a lot of possession; one in which we will not have as much possession, but will have to defend a lot, like Monday's match against the Kansas City Wizards; and one against a challenging Division I opponent, which will we get against Ohio State, a program that played in the national title match last year.”
The Bluejays netted four of their five goals in the opening 45 minutes, beginning with a goal from Thayer in the 18th minute. The forward knocked in a rebound after Nebraska's keeper turned away a Tim Walters shot.
Newcomer Kyle Deremer used his size to knock in a header off of senior Andrei Gotsmanov's corner kick in the 24th minute to push CU's lead to 2-0. Tucker Sindlinger then put a diving header into the net in the 38th minute off a crossing pass from Thayer. The Jays wrapped up their first-half scoring in the 44th minute, when senior Seth Sinovic took a long lead pass from Thayer and put it in with ease.
Scoring concluded when a pair of freshmen connected on the Jays' second-half goal in the 59th minute. Kris Clark sent a through ball to Ethan Finlay who out-raced the Nebraska defense and tucked the ball past the opposing keeper.
The Jays dominated possession, out-shooting Nebraska 32-8, with 16 shots in each half for the home team.
Brian Holt started in net for the Jays, but did not face a shot on goal in his first half play. Nick Goldreich and Bryan Hoie split second-half duties, each making one save to preserve the CU shutout.
Other highlights included a full half of play from junior Byron Dacy, returning after a medical redshirt season due to a torn ACL. The forward launched a game-high six shots in the second-half, two hitting the post and one going on goal. Freshman Nick O'Neill also found himself in the scoring mix often in the second half, attempting four shots, including two on goal.
CU's exhibition season continues on Monday when the Jays travel to play the Kansas City Wizards of MLS. CU wraps up the preseason with a match at 2007 NCAA runners-up Ohio State on Sunday, Aug. 24.
The Jays kick off the regular-season with a home match against Gonzaga on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
