OMAHA, Neb. ? Jeff Thayer scored twice to help the sixth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team open the season with a 4-1 win over Gonzaga Friday night at Morrison Stadium. Thayer's two second-half goals, along with Tucker Sindlinger's game-winning tally in the 59th minute, helped the Bluejays pull away from the Bulldogs after the visitors had scored the equalizer in the 54th minute. The third-largest regular-season home crowd in school history turned out for the match, as 4,071 fans helped the Jays enter the new season in style.
The Bluejays wasted little time getting on board in the opening half, as Andrei Gotsmanov found the back of the net in the 13th minute. The senior forward, who led the Jays with six goals and 17 points last year, started the scoring play near midfiled by sending the ball wide out left to fellow senior Seth Sinovic. Sinovic took the ball into the corner and sent a perfect crossing pass to the foot of Gotsmanov, who sent in the left-footed side volley past the Gonzaga keeper.
CU took that 1-0 lead into halftime, as the two teams combined for just five shots in the opening half.
Gonzaga caught the Jays out of position for the equalizer in the 54th minute. Tye Perdido snuck behind the Bluejay defense on a lofted crossing pass from Bryan Mullaney and headed the ball over CU keeper Brian Holt to knot the match at 1-1.
The match wouldn't stay tied long, as Sindlinger put in a rebounded shot at 58:49 to give the Jays the lead for good. CU's pair of players on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List assisted the goal, as Gotsmanov's corner found its way to the head of Byron Dacy, who's shot was cleared off the line by a GU defender. Sindlinger was there to clean up the play and put CU up 2-1.
Thayer scored in the 81st minute when his non-stop effort helped him take the ball away from the GU defense in the box and he put it away from close range. The junior forward then put a nifty shot past Gonzaga keeper Andrew Hickman in the 86th minute, as he flipped it off his back heel into the net. His second tally was set up by fantastic passes from sophomore Andrew Duran and freshman Kris Clark.
Five different Bluejays assisted the three different Bluejay goal-scorers in the match. Holt, a redshirt freshman making his first appearance as a Bluejay, stopped three shots to earn the win in goal.
Dacy, returning from an ACL injury, played 53 minutes and led the Jays with four shots, including three on goal ? two of which were turned back from GU defenders on the goal line.
The Bluejays return to action next Friday when they play host to the Diadora Challenge at Morrison Stadium. CU battles Portland at 7:00 p.m., following the Saint Louis vs. UC Riverside contest, which kicks off at 4:30 p.m.
