OMAHA, Neb. ? Creighton has added a third men's soccer exhibition to its schedule for its upcoming season. The Bluejays have announced they will take on the Kansas City Wizards of MLS on Monday, Aug. 18. CU will travel to take on the Wizards in a morning exhibition at the Wizards' new Swope Park training facility. Play, which is open to the public, is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
“We certainly thank the Wizards making us one of the few college teams they are playing during the college preseason,” said head coach Bob Warming on the rare opportunity. “Our staff went and visited with them this summer and really enjoyed learning from what they were doing with their players. We have a couple of former players there and it was good to get the players perspective on the training ideas.”
The Bluejays have matched up with the Wizards in past exhibitions and have also done battle with MLS' Toronto FC in exhibition play. This past spring the Bluejays faced off with the U.S. Olympic team in an exhibition in Florida.
“Our players will really benefit from solving the problems that Kansas City's professional players will present in the match,” Warming stated. “They will be in midseason form and we will just be getting started, so I am sure there will be a lot of valuable video for our guys to learn from. I felt like our guys learned a lot against the Olympic team last spring and this will be another opportunity for them to be in an environment that simply can not be replicated in the collegiate game. We will go there, have fun, be competitive as heck, and appreciate the experience.”
The trip to Kansas City will be a homecoming of sorts for a pair of Kansas City Rockhurst High School graduates on this year's CU squad. Senior Seth Sinovic (Leawood, Kan.) and freshman Alex DeZeeuw (Overland Park, Kan.) both hail from the Kansas City area.
Former Bluejay Michael Kraus was drafted by the Wizards in the 2007 supplemental draft and is still a member of the squad.
The Bluejays open their exhibition season with a home match against the University of Nebraska club team on Friday, Aug. 15 and wrap up the preseason with a match at 2007 NCAA runners-up Ohio State on Sunday, Aug. 24.
The Jays kick off the regular-season with a home match against Gonzaga on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
Creighton advanced to its 16th straight NCAA Tournament last year, one of only four teams in the nation to accomplish that feat. The Jays finished the season 12-3-5 overall and went 4-0-2 to earn a share of the MVC regular-season title. CU returns seven starters from last year's squad.
